Squirrels: some like them and some dislike them. Anyway, my daughter is really fond of them, and buying some squirrel food really seemed like a good idea to me. While I was in the grocery store a few weeks ago, I wandered down an aisle that I have never really paid much attention to while shopping. I found a lot of great things there for pets. Though I always buy pet food for my cats, I never paid attention to the other things. They had a huge variety of things for dogs and cats, but I also noticed they had bird and squirrel food. I decided to get some to take home for my daughter.

I thought the squirrel food would be a lot of fun for my daughter. We have a few squirrels that like to hang out on our front porch, but they are usually seen by my husband on the way to work in the morning, but my daughter never had a chance to see them up close. I thought if we got the squirrel food they would come around more often, and she would get a chance to see them up close through the windows. I got some bird food too, as there are birds who love to hang out in the bush near the porch.

We recently had a large snow storm, and after it stopped snowing we went out to put out some squirrel food. She tossed it on the side of the steps and on the cleared walkways. It was only an hour later before there was a squirrel sitting on our steps eating the squirrel food. My daughter squealed with delight, which of course scared away the squirrel, but it was back for more an hour later. Now each day we go out to make sure there is some food left for the squirrels, and she spends a lot of time looking out the window to see if we have any visitors.

There are some who refuse to buy squirrel food because they are trying to get rid of the squirrels that show up to eat the bird food. They miss the point of the food, as it might just keep the squirrels out of the bird food. Some people go out of their way to find feeders that the squirrels cannot get into, but if they would make a special space to feed the squirrels, they might find they leave the bird food alone. My grandfather has been putting out ears of corn for that very reason for years, and he has found that the squirrels do leave the bird food alone if there is something more to their liking available.
